Better Balance, Friendly Floor

In the great white north, walking anywhere right now is a cross between an obstacle course and a curling game. In warmer climates, ice and snow are not a risk; but uneven sidewalks and ground can become a small hidden risk.

I view balance as a dynamic, living process – a brilliant synthesis of sensations and sensory information that supports us to navigate our environment – all of the small slips and uneven stepping that can take us in a moment from feeling balanced to teetering.

When we are closed off from these sensations teetering is more likely to turn into falling.

Winter walking turns many of us into puffer coat penguins, waddling with care down our front walk – bracing against a slip that becomes a fall. The thing about bracing is it sets you up to fall while tight and rigid. Using a kind power in motion lens, bracing against falling is about the surest way to set up a harsh outcome from a fall.

In my approach, I start from the ground up - to create a friendlier relationship with the floor. It's about improving proprioception (how you sense yourself in space), improving the flow and use of sensory information to detect balance as you lose it. And it is about building reflexes that happen before you can think about it.

Once we learn how to move in a friendly relationship with the floor, falls become kinder.

Even on ice and snow! Check out my upcoming class - Better Balance, Friendly Floors to learn how to access the sensory information that supports you to maintain your balance and is your early warning system for an upcoming fall.
