Are you a confident mover?

What moves are you confident to perform? Walking across a floating dock?  Climbing a step ladder?

Why does confidence in movement matter?

Reason 1: The presence (or absence) of confidence affects how you present yourself and how other people perceive you.

Reason 2:  It affects how you perceive yourself and the stories you tell yourself about yourself โ€“ these stories affect how you perceive your abilities and capacities.

Reason 3: Confidence in movement creates a friendlier world to move in.

What gets in the way of being confident in movement?

Moving with confidence is a byproduct of being connected.  I see every day people who move without confidence who are disconnected from themselves and their environment.

 Disconnect happens when:

  • Mind is separate from body

  • Ground is separate from feet

  • Self is separate from center

Gaining confidence in motion relies on growing a viscerally felt sense of connection within yourself.

When we are disconnected, we are less able to access personal resources to stabilize and steady ourselves.

What does being disconnected feel like?

For me, my eyes tend to look up.  My head feels like it is spinning.  I lose track of what my hands are doing (so tend to knock things over when I talk).

What does being connected within yourself feel like?  Have you felt this feeling before? If not, learning this may grow who you are as a person.

What does being connected feel like?

I feel a sense of aliveness in my arms and legs.  My spine naturally straightens a little.  I sense the ground more clearly with the soles of my feet. My perception of myself becomes a little more wholesome. When I act from this feeling of connection, I feel clearer, more purposeful - I can act on my intentions more cleanly.

How do we lose confidence in our movement?

One way we lose confidence is when we feel like we canโ€™t rely on a body part.

  • The knee that doesnโ€™t support you to hike down the hill

  • The wrist hurts when you lift a shopping bag

  • The tweak in your low back after a day in the garden

If you only have one movement strategy and that brings painโ€ฆthe sensible choice is to stop moving.  When you lack confidence in movement because of pain and discomfort, you create a smaller and smaller repertoire of movement possibilities.

This is the beginning of a life that is growing smaller.

Choosing not to move is like choosing a โ€œSee Jane Sitโ€ level of movement vocabulary.  You canโ€™t express everything you want to say through your movement.

Greater movement vocabulary leads to greater confidence in movement.

Growing your movement confidence is what we do in my classes.  So you can feel confident in motion.  Please join the wait list to receive information on upcoming classes.
